Reading the attached blurb (I am thankfully deaf) I notice the "Oh dear, it's big bad China" line emerging once again but not a single mention of the only country (barring the Islamic hell-hole that is Australia) that could realistically pose a threat to New Zealand: Indonesia.
Recent reports note historical electronic spying on New Zealand by China.
Everyone appears to consider this, due to New Zealand's 2008 FTA with China to be reprehensible. New Zealand has even whinged to the Chinese ambassador about it.
I do mean "everyone", on this the left ad right seem unified.
Well, everyone but me maybe.
Consider the spying report: The report suggests that a decade or two ago China was spying on the "five eyes" countries.
How terrible, particularly because "five eyes" was set up after WWII to spy (they use "gather intelligence") on communist nations (mainly).
China at the time was becoming communist.
5 eyes goes strong, continues to spy on the world, including China.
The reaction to the report is rather interesting.

More stories about China and it's military might, this morning in The Sun from UK.
These Chinese must be nasty, greedy people, wanting to take over the World - except I can't remember a single time in Chinese history they've done anything other than defend themselves.
They helped out North Korea and Vietnam against the easy-beat Seppos but even then they simply lent a hand and then moved back whence they had come. (A pity GW didn't learn from them.)
Except for some sabre rattling around Formosa, which is traditionally Chinese, and the odd fist/club fight on the India border the whole history of China is one of non-aggression.
Their main form of influence is spreading money where it can do the best for China and it's trade. Basically creating customers not enemies.
So why the continued anti-China rhetoric from Western pollies?
Is it because too little of that Chinese money has come into Western pollies' hands?
The only seriously wrong thing they have done was, when China, via Taiwanese explorers, transported a bunch of illiterate, nasty, pig-ignorant savages from where they had been kicked out of in the central Pacific to a group of islands that you needed brains (which they didn't have) to produce food - hence promoting cannibalism.
For that they can never be forgiven but, that aside, maybe it's time to give China a break.
Concentrate instead on the Middle East to North Africa to India scum who are openly trying to destroy civilisation and drag humanity backwards.
THEY need stopping!
There has been a great deal said about China here in New Zealand lately, particularly after China's move to increase it's involvement with The Solomon Islands.
Much of that comment has been brainless.
China simply is too big to be effected by anything New Zealand can do financially or militarily.
The gutless behaviour of the West in the Ukrainian war demonstrates that a small country with no real use like New Zealand will also get no genuine assistance should China (or USA, Russia, Indonesia, Philipines or India) etc. decide they can do a better job growing grass than the current peoples of New Zealand do.
Rather than a call to arms New Zealand should treat China as a trading partner only, mind our own business as far as politics go and keep our heads down internationally. Only then can New Zealand, once rid of the current abortion, hope to become a successful country.
